Born in Chile, Arrau began his musical journey at a young age, studying under his mother, a piano teacher. He later traveled to Berlin for further studies, where he was taught by Martin Krause, a student of Franz Liszt. Arrau's career took off in the 1920s, and he quickly gained international recognition for his technical virtuosity and expressive playing.
His students included many prominent pianists, such as Alicia de Larrocha and Daniel Barenboim.

He also won awards such as the Grand Prize Virtuoso Piano Paris, Grand Prize Virtuoso Piano London, and Grand Prize Virtuoso Piano Bonn.
Fun Fact: Landa de Romero has taken virtual piano lessons with Raul, since the pandemic. They took lessons virtually and didn't physically meet until several years later.
